The 8th Alert
This name refers to the alert triggered at 1:30 PM on June 6, 1944, during D-Day. On that day, Caen was a key objective for the British troops, while the Canadians were tasked with capturing the Carpiquet airfield.
Allied bombers had the mission of destroying the bridges over the Orne River to block German reinforcements. Unfortunately, the airstrikes, conducted from high altitudes, led to the destruction of a large part of the city, causing over 2,000 civilian casualties, including 335 during the afternoon bombing.
